DEPARTURES   (For Lisanne)

after hugging one more
quick "i love you"
you disappeared while
the train pulled slowly
away, i waited,
then caught one last
glimpse of you
through the windows
but you didn't
look back...
(as usual,
you knew
that was best.)

while the churning wheels
on the rails drowned
a lingering sigh in
my throat, i turned,
and light slipped away
as i went down
the dirty stairwell
and through
the dark, wet
tunnel...
(that doesn't seem
to frighten me
any more.)

still caught in your scent
that was so close
not one minute ago yet
miles away from
me and my small town
where i know
every crevice
and everyone
still smiles
your name...
(it felt strange
walking on
alone.)
